Rosacea is a common potentially life disruptive skin problem estimated to affect more than 500,000 Australians. This can begin with an exaggerated facial flushing tendency particularly affecting the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead area. Progression is associated with a more persistent facial erythema (redness) along with telangiectasia (broken capillaries). Acne like spots and sensitive skin are features of rosacea. Rosacea can also involve the eyes often resulting in irritation or a ‘gritty’ feeling. In severe cases and where not well controlled it can be associated with tissue swelling and enlargement of the nose (known as rhinophyma).

Laser and light treatments can be very useful for controlling Rosacea. Our leading Scandinavian Ellipse Nordly’s laser system can be particularly useful for treating rosacea. This has several very effective laser options for treating the different skin changes seen in rosacea. This includes leading targeted sub-millsecond pulse IPL technology (Intense Pulsed Light) along with the powerful long pulse Nd:Yag Vascular Laser. Photodynamic therapy enhanced laser is another useful therapeutic option.

To manage rosacea skin care products designed for sensitive skin should be used (fragrance and soap-free). Fragrance, alcohol, witch hazel and menthol in skin care products commonly flare rosacea and should be avoided. Skin should be cleansed using luke warm water and abraisive face washes avoided. Medicated topical creams containing azelaic acid, ivermectin, metronidazole and brimonidine can help control many of the early features of rosacea. Mandelic Acid peels and oral antibiotics can be beneficial. A good broadspectrum sun protection skin protective product is also important. Anti-inflammatory cosmeceuticals such as those containing nicotinamide may be beneficial.
