What is Radiofrequency (RF) and how does it work?
Radiofrequency is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that combines traditional microneedling with the application of radiofrequency energy. This utilizes fine microneedles to target this energy. This energy is delivered to the skin’s collagen layer by an oscillating electric current that heats the tissue between the needles initially contracting collagen fibres then over the following months stimulating new collagen and elastin production and promotes skin tightening and rejuvenation.
The Secret RF via its action can also target the hair follicles sebaceous gland along with unwanted subcutaneous fat (improving acne, shrinking large oil or sebaceous glands and reducing unwanted fat).
By focusing energy into the deeper skin layers Secret RF is a safe option even in Asian and Darker Fitzpatrick skin types.
The Secret RF has continued to improve and evolve and now comes with a larger 64 pin treatment tip option that has made treatments faster and more comfortable but still allows flexibility to treat around important areas such as the eyes. Secret RF treatments can be tailored and customised depending on your needs allowing for skin rejuvenation treatments of the face, neck and chest safely and effectively.
Indications:
- General skin rejuvenation – wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin texture and pigmentation
- Skin Tightening – loose, sagging skin
- Fat Reduction – targeting the jowls, double chin or eyebags
- Age/sun damaged skin – dry, dull, pigmented, wrinkled/lined skin
- Problematic skin – red, comedonal prone (blackheads/whiteheads), large pores
- Acne and Acne Scarring – acne (ice pick, rolling and box car scars), surgical, traumatic
Recent studies with radiofrequency needling also show promising results in:
- Rosacea (redness and it’s acne like lesions)
- Melasma (in combination with other treatment measures)
What is involved and what is the downtime?
The skin is cleansed and a topical anaesthetic is applied to reduce procedure related discomfort.
Microneedling involves tiny needles that create controlled micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. Once the needles reach deeply in the skin they deliver radiofrequency energy and controlled heating.
You may feel temporary discomfort or a sensation or warmth.
Following the procedure, topical treatments will be provided to assist skin healing and recovery and to enhance outcomes and reduce risks (CE Ferulic acid and other cosmeceuticals).
You will be provided post-treatment care instructions which will include sun protection.
Downtime RF needling delivers energy below the very surface epithelial layer of the skin allowing for relatively low downtime treatments, in most cases a dry, red face for 2-3 days is the standard.
How many treatments will I require?
This will vary between individuals, their skin problem and treatment goals.
A series of three treatments may be initially suggested then an annual maintenance treatment for photoaging or rejuvenation.
For acne scarring more treatments may be required or combination with other treatments such as subcision.
What are the risks?
RF microneedling is considered a safe and effective procedure when provided by a qualified and experienced dermatology health professional.
Redness and swelling are usually mild and typically settle over days.
Discomfort and pain are usually mild and limited to the procedure.
As with any treatments involving needles, bruising, and crusting may occur.
Temporary changes in skin pigmentation may occur after treatment
With any treatment that breaks the skin infection may occur. Your post treatment skin care can help minimize this risk.
Scarring
Allergic reaction to one of the products used during or after the procedure
When do I see benefits and does everyone benefit?
Although benefits start days after your treatment is completed, full benefits take 3-6 months.
Benefits vary. This treatment relies on your body’s healing response including the production of new collagen fibres. Age, general health, some medications and smoking can all affect recovery and the benefits seen.
Secret RF can be considered in those with mild to moderate skin laxity wanting a non-surgical face lifting treatment. It is not suitable for more severe laxity or skin changes when used on its own.
What other treatments does this work in combination with?
Secret RF can be used as a stand-alone treatment.
This can be combined with other forms of radiofrequency treatments such as sublative RF for greater surface skin improvement.
We call our combination treatment with Secret RF and a CO2 laser micropeel (Fraxis Duo) Revitalize. This is a good option for those with greater surface skin ageing changes.
