At KDAA, we understand the significant impact that surgical scars can have, particularly in visible areas such as the face, neck, and chest. Whether you are undergoing surgery for the removal of a benign skin lesion or skin cancer, we are committed to helping you achieve the best possible scar outcomes. Below, we outline the steps to optimise your scar management and healing process.
Pre-Surgical Treatment and Skin Priming
Skin Care
Use sun protection (SPF 50+) and appropriate, science-based cosmeceuticals (SkinCeuticals) to promote a healthy skin biome.
Laser Pre-Treatment
- ALMA HYBRID Soft Lift 1570nm laser or CANDELA NORDLYS 1550 (or Photofrax combining vascular IPL and 1550nm laser) may be offered in the days leading up to surgery.
- This pre-treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production thereby improving the skin’s healing response.
Muscle Activity Management
- For surgeries involving areas with strong facial muscles (e.g., forehead), injections to reduce muscle activity may be recommended to prevent adverse effects on scar formation.
Post-Surgical Care and Early Intervention
Wound Care
- Keep the wound clean and follow your dermatologist’s care instructions as provided.
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing and minimise complications like infections.
Silicone Scar Gels and Sheets
Silicone Scar Gels and Sheets (highly recommended with published evidence/data to support use)
- Create a protective barrier to retain moisture and promote optimal healing.
- Help flatten and soften scars, reduce redness, and alleviate itching or discomfort.
Early Intervention
Start treatments at or soon after suture removal – Preferred treatments include
- Vascular laser therapy (CANDELA VBEAM).
- Non-ablative fractionated lasers (ALMA HYBRID or CANDELA NORDLYS 1550)
- Performed monthly for three or more sessions to reduce redness, flatten raised scars, and improve texture.
Treatment of Established Scars
Thickened, Stretched, or Problematic Scars are best treated with a combination approach such as
- Injection of skin healers like REJURAN Scar to promote collagen synthesis and skin repair.
Laser treatments, including
- Vascular laser (CANDELA VBEAM).
- Non-ablative fractionated laser (ALMA HYBRID Soft Lift 1570 or CANDELA NORDLYS 1550).
- Ablative fractionated laser (ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR) or hybrid laser (ALMA HYBRID CO2 + 1570) combinations.
Radiofrequency Microneedling
Radiofrequency Microneedling (CANDELA MATRIX) treatments for additional refinement.
Laser-Assisted Drug Delivery (Transepidermal Delivery - LADD)
Enhances penetration of active ingredients tailored to the scar type
- Thin and stretched scars.
- Thick and irritable scars.
